Downington West PA's boys team is having a dream season and it got even better on Saturday at NXN Northeast.

The Whippet Footracing Team, already champions of the Manhattan Invitational and the Pennsylvania Class AAA meet, added the regional title. Josh Hoey and Henry Sappey finished fifth and eight, respectively, in the team scoring.

Downington West scored 97 points to earn its first trip to NXN.

Christian Brothers Academy has bounced back in a big way from the stinging disappointment of a Non-Public Groups loss in New Jersey two weeks ago. CBA dispatched rivals Don Bosco Prep and Old Bridge at the NJ Meet of Champions and then did it again at NXN Northeast to grab the second team berth.

Senior leader Blaise Ferro poured it on late to take the overall win in 15:45.9. CBA will go to NXN for the eighth time.

La Salle RI's talented trio -- David Principe Jr, Matthew Bouthillette and Jack Salisbury -- had a bittersweet day. Principe led much of the race but finished third overall. Bouthilette was fifth. Those two will advance to Portland and run as individuals. Salisbury was 14th. The three of them totaled 18 points but they were not well supported by their fourth and fifth scorers and La Salle finished a distant sixth.

There was joy and heartbreak in the girls race, where Pennsbury PA ran to a dominating win but La Salle RI and Coe-Brown NH tied for second place. La Salle edged Coe-Brown on a sixth runner tiebreaker (42-68).

A second here or there was the difference between advancing to NXN and staying home. Coe-Brown did not receive one of the four at-large berths.

Two weeks earlier, La Salle beat Coe-Brown 60-86 to win the New England Championship.

Up front, Pennsbury (Lower Bucks) went 2-4-5 overall (1-3-4 in the team scoring) and finished with 59 points.

Downington West PA's Aislinn Devlin beat Pennsbury's returning regional champion, Olivia Sargent, 17:54.6 to 18:06.4. That's a different script than the way it played out at the Pennsylvania state meet, where Sargent beat Devlin 18:01 to 18:09.
